Brandy's Automotive Tips from Allied Auto Works: Wiper Blade Options

brandy

It's a clear, beautiful fall day here in Los Altos.  Hi, Brandy here. Today you can see clearly through your windshield, but before you know it, the rain will be here, and those wiper blades better perform and help you see clearly.  So I guess you have figured it out that I will be barking about the importance of the "wiper blade"!

Wiper blades are critically important to Los Altos drivers for good driving visibility and safety. When it’s time to replace your wiper blades, there are a number of different wiper blade designs and grades. Los Altos drivers should always use at least the design or grade that came with their vehicle.

If you live in CA where there is a lot of wet weather, flying insects, or you do a lot of highway driving, you may want to upgrade to a more advanced design or premium-quality wiper blade. Your friendly, professional Allied Auto Works service advisor can share the options available for your vehicle and help you decide which wiper blades are best for you.

I leave you with this music lyric,

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone.
I can see all obstacles in my way.
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind.
It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright) sunshiny day. ~ Johnny Nash

Cayenne Lines You Up (Alignment Inspection)

cay

Hello Everyone, it's Cayenne and I am going to keep everyone straight today as we bark about alignment inspection.  So let's point straight and start barkin'.

When you head down a straight road, does your vehicle pull to one side?  Do you feel vibration in any of the wheels? If you've noticed any of these things, it's probably time for you to get your wheel alignment checked.

When your vehicle left the factory, its wheels were parallel to each other and perpendicular to the ground.  That maximizes traction for good steering and braking. Every time you take your vehicle on the road, normal wear and tear will affect your alignment. Hit a bump, a pothole, or a curb and all those little knocks will add up

Bad alignment not only can cause your steering wheel to pull unevenly, it can also wear your tires out a lot faster than they should. In fact, if you look at your tires and see one side of the tread is a lot smoother than the other, it could be another sign of bad alignment.

Because different problems can cause similar symptoms, our trained technician will first test-drive your vehicle. Then, they'll check the front end and steering linkage and look for tire wear.  Then, the technician will put your vehicle on a lift and use computerized diagnostic equipment to measure alignment angles so they can precisely align your vehicle's components.

There are different kinds of alignments.  One is a front-end alignment that aligns components of the vehicle's front axle.  Another is a thrust alignment that makes sure the front wheels are lined up with the direction the rear wheels are pointed.  A third type is four-wheel alignment, which is usually used on all-wheel drive and  4-wheel drive vehicles.  It's also recommended for front-wheel drive vehicles that have independent rear suspensions.  It makes sure the angles of all the wheels are where they should be relative to each other and also the vehicle's body or frame.

Your steering wheel should be perfectly centered if you are heading straight down the road, so the technician will adjust it so it is. Finally, they'll take your vehicle back on the road for a final test drive to make sure it's performing the way engineers intended.

Your service adviser can recommend how often you should have your alignment inspection, since it depends on the type of vehicle you drive (SUV, sporty car, etc.) and your driving environment.  Properly aligned wheels can help your vehicle perform better and save you from expensive repairs down the road.

I leave you with my fun quote about driving straight,

“Straight roads are for fast cars, turns are for fast drivers.” — Colin McRae

Duke Asks "Hey Los Altos Drivers, How Many Miles Are on Your Car?"

duke

Hey, Duke here this week. You know I go for a lot of car rides, and the miles on my owner's car can really add up.  You should know that at certain mileage intervals, something may be due for maintenance.  Today we will bark about the miles on your vehicle and what you should be doing.  Let's start tracking those miles and get barkin'!

Nowadays, Los Altos drivers are paying more at CA gas pumps. For some families, it adds up to several hundred dollars every month. That's got to come out of the budget somewhere. This is one reason many CA drivers are putting off buying a new car. They plan to keep their old vehicle a year or two longer than before.

Even now, 2/3 of the personal vehicles on our local Los Altos, CA, roads have over 75,000 miles (120,000 kilometers). The average vehicle age is over nine years. And most people in the Los Altos area can't afford to be stranded or inconvenienced by a breakdown. So following a regular maintenance schedule, like a personal diet and exercise plan, is critical to protecting your investment.

Determining what to do for a higher-mileage vehicle can be challenging because many owners' manuals don't publish service intervals after 60,000 miles (100,000 kilometers). So Los Altos drivers need to keep better records and plan preventive maintenance.

You can start by figuring that services with a recommended interval should still be performed on that interval, even after you're past the tables in your service manual. For example, a service might be recommended every 15,000 miles (24,000 kilometers). Well, keep doing it every 15,000 miles (24,000 kilometers) for as long as you own the car.

Now, higher-mileage engines operate under more stress. Some CA automotive experts suggest that the severe service schedule is more appropriate and that routine service should be performed at shorter intervals. Check your owner's manual or ask your service advisor at Allied Auto Works to see whether the severe service schedule is right for your vehicle.

Keeping up with your full-service oil change schedule matters for a couple of reasons. First, older engines have had more time to build up oil sludge. Skipping an oil change here and there can really compound the problem for your vehicle.

Another equally important reason is that you routinely check and top off your other fluids. Power steering fluid, brake fluid, coolant, and transmission fluid can be kept at optimal levels even though the older seals and gaskets are leaking more than when they were new.

And speaking of older seals and gaskets: they start to dry out and become more brittle with age. You may want to consider using high-mileage formulation oil and fluids. These products contain additives that condition seals and gaskets to help prevent leaks. High-mileage formulations cost more than standard products, but they are well worth it for preventing serious repair bills down the road.

Older vehicles in the Los Altos, CA, area need repairs and replacements that newer ones don't: timing belts, radiator hoses, suspension work, anti-lock brakes, airbags, water pumps, alternators, and batteries. That may seem like a lot to do, but it often works out cheaper than new-car payments.

With a high-mileage vehicle, a couple of relationships will become pretty important to Los Altos drivers. First is your relationship with your service advisor at Allied Auto Works. You need someone you trust to care for your car and keep your needs in mind. Ask for help developing a plan to keep your vehicle roadworthy that fits your budget and the Los Altos, CA, area driving conditions.

The next relationship is with your vehicle itself. We're not talking about naming your car or tucking it in at night. We just mean - pay attention and get to know your vehicle. Notice unusual sounds, smells, vibrations, etc. Then you can describe the changes to your service advisor at Allied Auto Works and head off problems. We can't control gas prices, but we can properly maintain Old Faithful to keep it safe and economical on the local Los Altos roads.

I leave you with my car mileage joke,

A driver tried to sell an old car with 250,000 miles on it, but nobody wanted to buy it.

The driver asked a friend for advice. The friend said, "Take it to my mechanic friend and have him roll the odometer back to 50,000 miles".

A month later, the friend asked, "Did you sell your car?"

The driver replied, "No, why should I? It only has 50,000 miles on it!"

Brandy Is Road Ready (Trip Inspection)

brandy

Hey, it's Brandy, and you know we dogs love ROAD TRIPS!  Maybe you've been cooped up for a while and are yearning for a change of scenery.  Or maybe you need to visit a relative who lives far away.  You choose not to fork out the big bucks for airline tickets, so it's time for a road trip.  Make sure you're road-ready by having your vehicle professionally inspected before the big drive.

One of our technicians can check several of your vehicle's most important systems so you can be more confident you'll make it the distance without a breakdown.  Here are a few things a trip inspection may include:

Your vehicle stops with brakes that, in turn, stop the tires.  They must both be in sound condition. The technician can check your tire tread, the condition of the sidewalls, and the tires' age.  Brakes have pads and rotors that should meet certain specs, so an expert inspection is important, too.

A technician can check other vital fluids such as engine coolant, power steering, transmission, and windshield washer fluid. Your wipers must be in good condition so you can see, and they're often one of the most neglected parts of a vehicle.

Your headlights must work correctly and be aimed properly so you can see and don't blind oncoming drivers. They're powered by your battery, and a technician will check how old yours is and how well it holds a charge, all important for reliable starting.

For cabin comfort, your climate control system needs to work properly, including both heat and air conditioning.  If repairs are needed, doing them before the trip is much more convenient than trying to do them while you're traveling.

The technician can inspect hoses and belts, two things that frequently fail on a long trip.  The big advantage of having a pro look over your vehicle is that they not only know what to look for but can also make the repairs the right way.  Now that'sthe ticket to being road-ready.

I leave you with my road trip quote,

It's not the destination, it's the journey." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
